Our Story
Step inside The Trolley Stop and feel two centuries of warmth. Our stone building, originally erected in 1833, has served this community as a tavern, country inn, general store, and boarding house — before returning to its roots as Ellicott City’s most beloved neighborhood gathering place.
We serve classic All-American cuisine: hearty breakfasts, hand-crafted half-pound sirloin burgers, Maryland crab cakes, prime rib, fresh pasta, and more — alongside a full-service bar open until 1AM, Tuesday through Sunday.

History
Almost 200 Years of Stories
The building that houses The Trolley Stop today was constructed around 1833, making it one of the oldest continuously operating tavern buildings in Maryland. Originally operating as a general store and tavern serving the mill workers and laborers of the Patapsco Valley, the building passed through the hands of several proprietors over the decades — including Edward B. McDonald, whose name adorned the facade in the late 1800s, as seen in the historic photograph alongside.
Through the Civil War era, the Industrial Revolution, and the rise and fall of the trolley lines that gave the restaurant its name, the building stood firm. Today, as The Trolley Stop Restaurant & Bar, it carries that heritage proudly — in its stone foundation, its exposed brick walls, its creaking wooden floors, and in every meal served beneath its original beam ceilings.
This isn’t just a restaurant. It’s nearly 200 years of community, craft, and character.

HAPPY HOUR
Every Tuesday through Friday, from 2 to 6 PM, the tavern fills with familiar faces and the clink of glasses. It’s a simple tradition: good drinks, good company, and the comfort of an old building that’s seen generations gather here.
OPEN MIC WEDNESDSYS
On Wednesday nights at 9 PM, the tavern becomes a small stage for locals, musicians, poets, and anyone carrying a piece of art they’re ready to share. It’s a gentle, welcoming room — the kind of place where stories settle in like old friends.
KARAOKE FRIDAYS
When Friday night rolls in, the first floor hums with laughter and bold voices. Karaoke begins at 9 PM, and it’s never just singing — it’s neighbors cheering each other on, strangers becoming friends, and the kind of fun that only happens in a place that’s been loved for decades.

“We came to The Trolley Stop for lunch. Enjoyed it so much we decided to return for dinner. The food was exquisite and plentiful. The service was fast and attentive to the perfect degree. The staff were very friendly to the point where we felt like we were at home. The prices are reasonable. For dinner we shared a Greek chicken pasta. We barely ate half of it because the portion was so large. It was amazing! We also enjoyed crab stuffed mushrooms and mozzarella sticks for appetizers. It was all delicious! We will be back!”
